The Challenge: Bridging Two Spaces with A Perforated Panel Facade

IDC Spring, a leading manufacturer of garage door wire forms and mechanical springs, faced a common organizational challenge that many manufacturing facilities face: a growing divide between their office space and factory space. The existing building failed to encourage cross-departmental collaboration, which is a key component of a successful manufacturing process. IDC’s primary goal for the renovation of their headquarters was to structurally unify the workplace to foster a cohesive team. In addition, they aimed to design a building that reflected the products they produce within the garage door and spring industry.

The Solution: Integrating the spring!

IDC Spring executed a major, multi-phase renovation project in 2022, rooted in a design philosophy that celebrated the company’s core product—the spring. The design incorporated elements inspired by springs and perforated metal throughout the building to visibly connect all employees to the manufacturing process.

Key architectural and functional solutions included:

Brand Integration: Extensive use of decorative metalwork coated in a bright yellow finishing to meet brand standards. A circle pattern with 40% open area was chosen for the Altair perforated panels to allow air and sunlight to pass though. StellarCraft provided the connection points and the installation of the custom perforated panel facade.

Workplace Unification: The interior update was an extension of the exterior design. A full-scale redesign of the office space and production floor integrated the departments and increased interaction and collaboration across teams.

Exterior Facelift: A comprehensive exterior overhaul involving new landscaping, a patio, and a balcony with a trellis. This included the use of 35 fins for the balcony trellis and 33 decorative fins on the building exterior to create a striking, product-inspired facade. The fins were mounted using steel bar stock furred off the CMU wall, ensuring a level surface for connection.

Reinforced Cultural Identity: The intentional design, which incorporated product elements like springs and metal forms, fostered a powerful, artistic, and motivational presence that visibly reinforced the mission and culture of the company.

Increased Collaboration: By strategically unifying the physical space, the renovation successfully bridged the gap between office and shop teams. The intentional open design fostered a collaborative environment across all departments.
